Today marks the first day of 40 days for life.

ladyatheist:

For the next 40 days, “pro-lifers” will be standing outside of abortion clinics around the country and the world praying, yelling, and harassing those who dare go inside. I, for one, will not stand for this. Unfortunately, I am not able to be part of or help stage a counter protest at a clinic. I’m moving in 6 days so my hands are kind of full.

However, what I can do is stage my own little counter protest online. From now until November 1st, I will be blogging about one fact about abortion. While they spread hate and lies I will spread a little truth.

I can’t do this alone. I’m just one tiny voice going up against thousands. In order to make a real impact, I’m going to need your help. If you have time, take a few minutes out of your day and send a tweet or write about one abortion fact. If you have a little more time to spare, find a way to take action. If you have a bit of money to spare, take some time to donate to Planned Parenthood. Every little bit helps.

So glad someone’s doing this.

If you’re in the Seattle area, we are planning on having three counter protests, two in Seattle and one in Everett. Facebook events are:

Update: Sunday organizing meeting and book discussion

We’re mixing it up a bit and combining an organizing meeting with our previously planned book discussion.

Fall organizing:
Coming off a summer of great pro-choice pickets in front of Planned Parenthood we’re looking forward to fall. Several folks have expressed interest in organizing a formal challenge to 40 Days for Life, a anti-choice organization that maintains a consistent presence outside of abortion clinics around the country for 40 days every fall (late Sept-early Nov). They have targeted a few Planned Parenthoods in the Seattle area. Anti-choice groups also set up large, offensive and medically inaccurate “photos” in Red Square at the University of Washington in the fall. Student groups have expressed interest in working with Seattle Clinic Defense to stage a counter-demonstration.

Please bring your ideas for these and other actions for the fall!

Book discussion: When Abortion Was a Crime
There is still time to read the book. But feel free to join us for the discussion even if you haven’t read/finished reading.

We’ll be meeting Sunday, August 28 at 1pm at Trabant Coffee and Chai in the University District (45th between Brooklyn and the Ave).

RSVP on facebook.

We had a great discussion this afternoon about “This Common Secret”-thanks to those who made it! The book does a fantastic job of showing just how marginalized abortion providers are within the medical community and the personal sacrifices they make in order to provide comprehensive reproductive care to their patients. Dr. Wicklund also did a great job showing the level of personal sacrifice of her patients who drive for hours, pay hundreds of dollars and are made to wait and wait in order to end a pregnancy.
Next we’ll be reading “When Abortion Was A Crime” by Leslie Reagan. The book details the reality of abortion before Roe vs. Wade. Several copies are available on Amazon and all three of the Seattle Public Library copies are available.
From the School Library Journal:Most books written about this subject focus on the post-Roe v. Wade period. Reagan relates heart-wrenching stories of women who survived abortions and those who did not. She includes narratives from physicians, midwives, husbands, and boyfriends. The stories of poisonous potions drunk by women in an attempt to “open up the womb” remind readers that reliable birth control and pregnancy tests are recent developments. The author’s research for this book comes from the Chicago AMA archives beginning in the mid-1800s when the organization led the way to criminalize abortion. Reagan utilized court records, police reports, medical literature of the day, and coroners’ reports. The result is a scholarly chronicle of abortion in a large city.
We’ll be discussing the book Sunday, August 28 at 1pm. We’ll be back at Trabant Coffee and Chai.

Next Up: August Clinic Defense

Our monthly counter-pickets in support of Planned Parenthood continue Saturday, August 13 at 9am. The right-wing Knights of Columbus continue to protest outside of the Madison St. Planned Parenthood in order to intimidate women out of receiving comprehensive medical care.

Last month we outnumbered them 2 to 1. Think we can make it 3 to 1 this time?

We’ll bring some signs and, of course, the banner. Feel free to make your own and bring your friends!

RSVP on facebook.

We’re reading This Common Secret by Susan Wicklund (available for purchase on Amazon or from your local library).
From Publishers’ Weekly:
In rational, compassionate and honest language, Wicklund chronicles more than 20 years as a medical doctor and women’s health provider with a “fundamental commitment to patients and to the cause of keeping reproductive rights safe and legal,” a commitment that would put herself and her family under direct threat from anti-abortion extremists, and cause her to adopt disguises and even a personal bodyguard in order to continue her work. Wicklund’s story is gripping and poignant, not only for its numerous personal accounts-including Wicklund’s own experience terminating her pregnancy-but in her consideration of current and proposed reproductive rights legislation; in addition to eye-opening statistics (“In 2006, 87% of counties in the United States had no abortion provider”), Wicklund provides a fine resource guide for further reading.
We’ll be discussing the book Saturday, August 6 at 1pm at Trabant Coffee and Chai in the University District.

This Saturday! Madison Planned Parenthood Clinic Defense

The Planned Parenthood clinic on E. Madison St. in Capitol Hill is often protested and picketed by anti-choice groups intent on intimidating, bullying, and harassing women and men who seek the vital health services provided by Planned Parenthood. The clinic staff are also subjected to such intimidation.

Come stand with us in support of Planned Parenthood! On Saturday, June 25th, we will hold a peaceful, supportive defense of Planned Parenthood at the E. Madison St. Clinic. Bring your signs, t-shirts, smiles, and friends to show that the community supports the vital services that Planned Parenthood provides for everyone, especially low-income women and men, and that we will not stand for extreme social agendas being forced upon the populous.
